What is the WhatsApp Business API and what does it cost?
The WhatsApp Business API (WhatsApp Business Platform) is Meta's official way for software to send and receive WhatsApp messages for a business. Meta charges per message for marketing templates, and replies within 24 hours of the customer's message are free. Providers may add their own fee.
What it does
The API lets an app or AI answer customers on your WhatsApp number, send order and appointment updates, and let several staff share one number. Messages you start yourself must use a template that Meta approves.
How the cost works
You pay Meta per message for the marketing templates you send. When a customer writes to you, replies within 24 hours are free. Rates depend on the message type and the customer's country, so check Meta's current pricing page. Providers that connect you to the API may charge a monthly or per-message fee.
Before you sign up
You need a Meta business account and a phone number to register. Ask the provider about its fees, whether you can keep using the WhatsApp Business app on your phone through Meta's coexistence option, and how you leave.
