How do I take a deposit before starting a job?
Put the deposit in the quotation: the amount or percentage, what it covers and when the balance is due. Write it into the quotation
State the deposit amount or percentage, what it pays for (materials, holding the slot) and whether it is refundable. For bigger jobs, split the rest into stages tied to progress, for example on delivery and on completion. Clear terms before the job save arguments later.
Get it paid before you start
Do not order materials or hold the date until the deposit is in. An online pay link lets the customer pay the same day they agree. Issue a receipt for the deposit and show it as paid on the final invoice.
